A Wild Torrent of Flame
To ensure a distinct gameplay experience, Nyra features her own unique weapon set. The iconic “holy trinity” of Sisters of Battle weaponry—bolters, flamers, and melta weapons—has been faithfully represented.
Considerable effort has been dedicated to making her flame-based weapons satisfying to wield. Effective visual and audio feedback is crucial for these weapons, ensuring they convey convincing destruction while clearly indicating damage application. The Heavy Flamer, in particular, aims to deliver an apocalyptic feel.
Enhancing Mobility with Fervent Slide
In a fast-paced shooter like Boltgun 2, character mobility is essential, especially for Nyra, who is designed to be even more agile than Malum.
Nyra’s core ability, Fervent Slide, provides swift traversal across levels, capable of tearing through cultists. Initiating a jump during the slide allows Nyra to perform a special Leap, useful for accessing elevated areas.
Immediacy is a core principle for Boltgun 2, ensuring abilities are intuitive and satisfying. Optional layers of functionality are built upon this straightforward foundation, expanding the utility of each ability.
Fervent Slide serves as an effective method for engaging and disengaging from combat. The Leap not only aids in reaching high ground but also allows for a brief slowdown of time by holding jump, enabling players to assess the battlefield or line up precise shots.
Melting the Enemies of the Emperor
Grenades in Boltgun 2 are enhanced and unique to each character’s arsenal. Reflecting Nyra’s fiery nature, she wields a devastating Melta Bomb.
This ability is straightforward: throw the bomb at an enemy for an explosion. However, additional depth is available; holding the throw button slows time for a more precise aim, and pressing it again after throwing detonates it early. This allows for advanced tactics, such as detonating the bomb above groups of enemies, or even shooting it midair.
Adding a Cutting Edge
Players familiar with Boltgun recognize Malum Caedo’s Chainsword as central to his gameplay. For Nyra, her Power Sword is designed to hold similar importance to her character.
Nyra’s initial ranged weapon is a one-handed Bolt Pistol, which allows the Power Sword to remain visible on screen. This design encourages players to engage enemies up close, executing powerful combo slashes with the Power Sword.
For enemies slightly out of reach, holding the melee attack button executes a forward thrust with the sword, dealing increased damage and often resulting in a display of gore.
Further emphasizing mobility and utility, the thrust attack can also be used for movement. Players are encouraged to explore creative combinations of Nyra’s abilities.
